Rumor: Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’ Will Lay the Groundwork For the New Spider-Man

By now, everyone is familiar with the interconnectedness of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how every film references what came before and what’s arriving next. So it makes sense that Ant-Man, the riskiest Marvel endeavor yet, will supposedly be filled with references to one of Marvel Studios’ surest things, the new Spider-Man. We guess the bug-themed superheroes have to stick together, huh?

According the folks over at Latino Review, Ant-Man will be the first MCU movie to directly reference the existence of Spider-Man and his particular corner of the Marvel universe. You shouldn’t expect an appearance from the web-head himself since he hasn’t been cast, but you can possibly expect references to Oscorp, the company run by Spidey’s arch-nemesis, Norman Osborn.

Latino Review emphasizes that this is an unconfirmed rumor, but it certainly makes sense. As we’ve seen in the trailers, Ant-Man’s chief villain, Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), plans to sell Hank Pym’s shrinking technology to the highest bidder. It would make perfect sense for Oscorp, which specializes in making things that cause all kinds of trouble for the people of New York City, to be interested. There doesn’t even need to be a cameo appearance from a new Norman Osborn. Just a simple name-drop will push all of the right fanboy buttons.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that the new Spider-Man won’t have an origin story and that he’s been quietly active in the MCU for a little while now, fighting street crime under the noses of the Avengers. Since these movies are all about building a living, breathing, cohesive shared universe, Ant-Man certainly sounds like the right place to start preparing audiences for Spider-Man and his villains to rear their heads in the same world as Iron Man and Captain America.

Ant-Man opens on July 17, 2015.
