Baseball in December? Tigers Make 2 Big Trades

It’s exactly two weeks until Christmas but our boys of summer, the Detroit Tigers, stole the spotlight today by making two big trades at the Winter Meetings in San Diego

The first deal saw the Tigers trade Rick Porcello to the Boston Red Sox for power-hitting outfielder Yoenis Cespesdes, reliever Alex Wilson and a minor league player.  The Tigers recently acquired a pitcher similar to Porcello in Shane Greene from the New York Yankees.

With Porcello set to get a big raise in arbitration this year, and with him being a free agent next year, the Tigers must have thought he was expendable and used to him to acquire a much need corner outfielder in Cespesdes, who is a superior defensive outfielder and carries a power bat.  He will fit in well in the Tigers lineup but he will also be a free agent at the end of the 2015 season.

Detroit also made another trade with the Cincinnati Reds, and acquired starting pitcher Alfredo Simon to replace Porcello.  In return, they gave the Reds shortshop Eugenio Suarez and minor league pitcher Johnathan Crawford.

The Tigers starting rotation now consists of Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez, David Price, Simon and Greene.  It seems doubtful they will keep Max Scherzer – a free agent who is reportedly looking for a new deal worth at least 200 million dollars.

My thoughts?  Cespesdes will be a huge outfield upgrade with some pop in his bat.  Simon and Greene will be decent 4th and 5th starters in 2015.  I think the trades upgrade the Tigers quite a bit.

And who knows, with Mike Illitch as owner they might not be done yet!
