Long Ball Seals The Deal Early As Tigers Rout Royals, 13-2

Tiger bats showed up swinging, Tuesday night, and romped over the Kansas City Royals, 13-2. However, the game started with more bad news for Tigers pitching, as the bullpen got called in for the second batter of the game. After just throwing five pitches, a shot off the bat of Royals’ 2nd baseman Whit Merrifield careened off of Anibal Sanchez’s right calf. Sanchez left the game in pain. Later reports indicated that Sanchez suffered a contusion, but an X-ray showed nothing more serious. The Tigers leaned on six different relievers, to make it through the game.

Tiger batters got things started with a monster 2nd inning. The Tigers sent eleven men to the plate and scored seven runs on a double, a single and two home runs. A homer from Jacoby Jones to right would score two and Mikey Mahtook would follow with a two run shot of his own, three batters later. The Tigers led 7-1.

Tiger batters weren’t done with the long ball. A John Hicks home run in the 4th scored two more and Jose Iglesias lined a solo shot to left in the 5th. The Royals would add their second run of the game in the 6th as Daniel Stumpf gave up a home run shot to left. The Tigers led 10-2 at the time, but a Hicks single in the 6th added one more. Jacoby Jones and John Hicks would both hit home run number two of the game, in the 7th and 8th, making it 13-2. And just as they did all game, Tiger relief pitching would hold on, for the win.

The Tigers will look to take the series from the Royals, Wednesday night. Matt Boyd (5-8  5.92 ERA) gets the start for the Tigers and the Royals will counter with Jason Hamme l(7-10  4.80 ERA). Our coverage begins at 6:45, on 95.3 WBCK.
