The old movie theater in Athens is open….but not for movies!  The Quonset Hut Theater had an open house yesterday in beautiful downtown Athens.

Owner Mark Doubleday has been working on the old building for several years, and will be staging theater performances there soon.  In fact, he’s holding auditions this week for a really good play, “The Cemetary Club”, on Wednesday from noon to 8pm and Friday from 4pm-8pm.  That play calls for 1 man and 4 women, all aged 50+.  Tech crew workers and a director are needed.

The theater was built in 1947 as a movie house. It’s probably mostly remembered as a carpet store, though. That was its most recent incarnation before Doubleday bought it for $27,000.   There was a TV screen in the nicely re-modeled lobby that showed photos of the building being renovated.

Doubleday told me he was staging plays at Athens High School, but ran into scheduling conflicts and wanted to find a space that the community could use whenever it wanted to do something.  He says he’s open to theater productions, concerts or even dances and hopes to have a wide variety of entertainment on the newly built stage.
