Tiger batters came through and Justin Verlander was dominant as they beat the LA Dodgers, 6-1. Justin Verlander and Dodger starting pitcher, Kenta Maeda both had no-hitters through the first five innings.

Offensively, Sunday afternoon’s game was a tale of two foul poles. Former Tiger, Curtis Granderson broke the ice again for the second day in a row. With two outs in the top of the 6th, Granderson launched a ball, hooking right that bounced off the pole, for a home run.

John Hicks started the Tiger half of the 6th with a single and Andrew Romine doubled. A double from Dixon Machado scored Hicks and Romine. With two outs, later in the inning, Justin Upton hooked a home run to left, bouncing off the left foul pole. The Tigers led 4-1.

Tiger batters were back at it again in the 8th. A single from Ian Kinsler and a walk to Jacoby Jones  put two men on for Miguel Cabrera who doubled to deep right center, splitting the outfielders. Kinsler and Jones scored. The Tigers led 6-1 and that’s how the score would stay. Daniel Stumpf came on for Verlander in the 9th and retired the Dodgers, while giving up one single.

Justin Verlander left the game late, with a well-deserved, standing ovation. In eight innings, Verlander gave up one run on two hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. The Tigers snapped a six game losing streak and will have the day off on Monday. The Tigers host the Yankees for three, beginning Tuesday, before heading to Chicago for three. Matt Boyd (5-6  5.70 ERA) gets the call and the Yanks will counter with Masahiro Tanaka (8-10  4.92 ERA). Our coverage begins, Tuesday night, at 6:45, on 95.3 WBCK.
